Denmark

Denmark's music history has many well-known crimes against music world, such as the eurodance bands Aqua and Daze. I'll not include any of that stuff here. Denmark has got quite a lot of excellent indie bands that sound very international. Usually you can't really hear the accent and that's probably why so many of them have received some recognition even in the English speaking countries. I was a bit surprised to see how many excellent jazz artists come from Denmark. Approximately one third of the playlist (the last part) is jazz. I did not include Faroe Islands or Greenland on this list leaving the door open for making their own respective lists later on. The whole playlist has over a hundred bands or artists and the playlist is over seven hours long. Enjoy: Denmark.

Satellites
The first artist on this list is not actually a Dane, but he started his project by the name of Satellites in Copenhagen, where he still makes music. This English singer-songwriter makes amazing melancholic and melodic music with excellent lyrics. His first album is a bit more traditional indie rock, whereas the second album delved into interesting electronic sounds.

Agnes Obel
Agnes Obel plays amazingly beautiful indie music. Her clear and airy vocals are strong and they sound amazing with the piano and ominous strings. This is the kind of fairyland music that grabs a hold of you and takes you on a magical journey.

Efterklang
Efterklang is one of the most original sounding indie bands of the 00's. Their sound is filled with interesting rhythms and electronic and orchestrated sounds that make it sound quite magical. This band is like the crossover between Arcade Fire and Animal Collective.

Cody
Cody makes atmospheric indie pop with interesting melodies. The production is very good and the sounds are as interesting as the compositions, which are also excellent. The laconic singing style is very cool.

Kashmir
Kashmir is a typical 00's indie rock band that plays very big sounding and magical melodies topped up with a high-pitched and untrained male vocals. The instrumentation ranges from folky acoustics to loud guitar walls.

Mew
Mew is another typical 00's band. They also have melancholic melodies and high-pitched male vocals. The sound is quite melodramatic ranging from quiet bits to explosive guitar and drum walls. They like to mix up rhythms. It sounds a bit like Blonde Redhead or some of the more experimental Death Cab for Cutie songs.

Choir of Young Believers
This band uses soulful rhythms and modern simple melodies. Their overall sound is quite melancholic, but not in a crushing sort of way. They do not rely on traditional melody building, but they rather play with loops and strange sounds.

The Rumour Said Fire
The Rumour Said Fire started their career by making cute and endearing folk music with excellent melodies. On their later albums they have taken a very different sound approach. Electronic sounds, echoey and industrial clear guitars and melancholic vocals.

Pil & Liv
Pil & Liv make beautiful indie folk that has that late 90's/early 00's singer-songwriter sound. They use some banjo and glockenspiel in their songs and the vocal harmonies are beautifully constructed. Excellent melodies as well.

Schultz And Forever
This music sounds very original. The backgrounds are quite typical folk sounds with acoustic guitar and subtle drumming, but the vocals are amazingly quirky. The vocals are very androgynous and that creates an otherworldly sound to the excellent songs.

The New Spring
The New Spring is quite a typical indie folk band with sunny melodies. The guitar pickings are skilfully played and the production is very well made. The melodies could be a bit more interesting though.

The Figurines
The Figurines makes quirky indie pop rock with interesting melodies. Acoustic guitars are accompanied by endearing organ sounds and nasal vocals. This somehow reminds me of The Coral. The production is pretty good.

epo-555
This indie rock band uses treble-filled guitars and melodic bass lines. The vocals are high-pitched, yet pleasant. The melodies are quite melancholic. There are some interesting sound choices as well. I especially like the vocal harmonies.

The Attic Sleepers
The Attic Sleepers plays atmospheric and slightly psychedelic indie pop. The picked acoustic guitars sound amazing combined to blinking sounds from a variety of piano and organ instruments. The clear and high vocals sound great as well.

Northern Portrait
Northern Portrait sounds like the modern version of the Smiths. The clear electric guitars sound amazingly like those of Johnny Marr and the singer's baritone is not that far away from Morrissey's voice. The lyrics are not necessarily as funny, but the music is fantastic.

Superheroes
Superheroes makes peppy and upbeat indie pop, where the soft female moans sing the background vocals for soft voiced high male voice. The background s filled with smooth organ sounds and space blinks.

Mikael Simpson
Mikael Simpson is a fantastic singer-songwriter, whose beautiful trembling voice gives his great compositions a nice touch. The usual band instruments manage to sound very original, because of the innovative use of different effects and sounds.

I Got you On Tape
I Got You On Tape plays melancholic and dark indie rock, where the bass and drums play disco beats over ominously tapping guitars. The vocals are sung in a deep baritone voice. This is almost like a disco version of The National.

Moi Caprice
Moi Caprice makes beautiful and melodic indie rock in the style of 90's brit pop. There are some great similarities to bands such as James or Suede. The melodies are very catchy and the vocals sound exceptionally beautiful when they reach for the stars.

Treefight for Sunlight
This indie pop rock band draws its main influences from 1960's psychedelia. Vocals have been doubled almost all the way and the instruments seem to be doing a whole lot filling in the sound world with buzzing and clicking.

Boho Dancer
Boho Dancer plays upbeat sunny indie rock where the drums and bass lines rush just appropriately giving a pulsing tempo, while the vocals soar above beautifully and strangely. The quiet bits give nice structure to the songs.

Oh No Ono
This band sounds quite hectic. there's a whole lot of stuff going on. The vocals sound really strange with the nasal high-pitched sound. It's like a faster version of the most psychedelic songs of Of Montreal.

Death by Kite
Death by Kite plays dark and modern post-punk where the clear electric guitars riff away vigorously while the bass lines keep everything together with quite simple melodies. The nasal high pitched vocals make this sound a bit like Placebo.

The Floor Is Made Of Lava
This band sounds so early-00's that there can be no mistake. The riffing guitars and discoesque drum beats are very similar to bands like Franz Ferdinand or The Strokes. So, if you're into that kind of stuff, this band will be right up your alley.

The Breakers
The Breakers plays kind of funky rock music with amazing raspy vocals. The guitars have overdrive, which points to similar sounds as the ones in 90's grunge, but the melodies are much more uplifting and there's some serious funkiness going on.

The Fashion
The Fashion plays raw indie rock with garage sounds. The vocals have mostly been doubled with gives even further power to them. The production is very well made and they do little tricks with stereo sounds.

The Blue Van
The Blue Van plays indie rock that takes some influences from hard rock and some from 90's britpop. The guitars are wailing and weeping beautifully, while the nasal vocals sing melancholic melodies beautifully.

Dúné
This band is the stereotype of late 00's indie rock scene. Sharp overdriven guitars with some electronic sounds in between. The rhythm takes precedence before the melodies even though in the choruses the melodies are quite catchy. Sounds a lot like TV on the Radio.

Avalyn
Avalyn has quite cheesy 80's hard rock sounds, but the music itself is more interesting. The echoey guitars work well together with disco beat drumming and strong and clear vocals with lots of echo. This is like a modern version of the best bits of 80's post-punk.

Kliché
Cliché plays fast and rebellious indie rock where the guitars riff vigorously while the vocals sing in Danish. The vocals do not really sound that interesting to be hones, but the attitude is similar to The Ramones.

Iceage
Ikea plays quite aggressive modern punk. I like their attitude and I guess some of the sounds are not too bad either. I do, however, think that they're a bit too unmelodic for my taste. It's difficult to enjoy their music because of no apparent melodies. There are a few exceptions though.

Brats
Brats is a first wave lo-fi punk band. This sound is really what punk is all about. They don't really know how to play that well, but the attitude is there and the resulting simple songs actually sound quite alright.

The Good The Bad
The Good The Bad makes aggressive psychedelic garage rock with strange riffs and screeching guitar solos. The album covers are somewhat disturbing. I guess this music will be to the liking of people who like garage rock, psychedelic rock or progressive rock.

Death to Frank Ziyanak
This is one of the weirdest bands I've heard in a long time, but somehow all of their incredibly strange sounds are appealing. Buzzing bass lines with light overdrive, feed-backing electric guitars and strange melodies.

Hurdy Gurdy
I have a soft spot for progressive rock bands of the 70's. Hurry Gurdy is one of the most interesting ones I've heard in a while. The wild guitar and bass jams sound excellent. This is about showing your pure talent in playing without worrying too much about songwriting.

Love Shop
Love Shop plays indie pop rock that kind of sounds like 90's britpop, but only sung in Danish. The choruses are catchy and there are slight hypnotic qualities in their guitars. The solo guitarist is definitely the star of the band.

Baby Woodrose
Baby Woodrose plays psychedelic rock with hypnotic yet quite raw sounds. The vocals are an amazing blend of male and female vocals that both sing in a strange kind of nasal voice. The hypnotic hippy guitars sound great.

The Savage Rose
The Savage Rose is a great 60's band with hypnotic hippy sounds. The bass lines are jumping about carrying the songs with their melodic approach. The high-pitched female vocals are really strange. There are also some jazzy bits here and there.

The Setting Son
The Setting Son plays psychedelic indie rock. Their influences are clearly in 60's garage rock, but something reveals that they're actually a bit more modern. The guitar sounds are quite raw and the drums have adopted that wild surf rock attitude.

The Raveonettes
The Raveonettes plays 60's style rock music where the guitars sound metallic and vocal harmonies sing playfully. The songs are sometimes a bit simple and there are not that many surprises, but sometimes simple is quite beautiful.

Afenginn
Afenginn plays interesting and melodic music that mostly relies on multiple instruments and interesting instrumental melodies. It's kind of like a blend of pop and classical music. They actually sound a bit like the early albums of Efterklang.

Slaraffenland
This interesting indie band knows how to hypnotise the listener by looping guitar riffs and pulsing bass lines. THere's something really shamanistic in their sound. The vocals are not that interesting, but then again the main focus is on the instruments.

Turboweekend
This band's sounds are a bit too electronic and too poppy for me, so I've chosen their acoustic version to the playlist. The high-pitched male vocals are quite beautiful, but I would like the instruments to tone down a bit to give more room for the vocals.

Sleep Party People
Sleep Party People play magical shoegaze music where the organ sounds create a wall of music that is pierced every now and again by echoey electric guitars that sound kind of otherworldly. The vocals are only there as an instrument, because it's impossible to hear what they say.

Substereo
Substereo makes melodic and playful indie rock music in the style of 90's britpop. The choruses are catchy and the overall sound is very authentic. There are some saloon piano type of stylings in the music along with some interesting slide guitars.

Psyched Up janis
Psyched Up Janis makes beautiful alternative rock with some psychedelic elements. It sounds quite a lot like the early albums of The Flaming Lips mixed together with the early Lemonheads albums. This band would no doubt be a treat live.

Burnin' Red Ivanhoe
This band plays quite straightforward guitar-driven rock, but the sounds have got some interesting quirks. The vocals are not that interesting, but I guess they have that progressive rock quality that fits in with these kinds of sounds. This sounds actually a bit like the Swedish band Dungen.

Saybia
Saybia plays melodic indie pop rock with a heavy focus on acoustic guitars and bass lines. They also have some interesting rock organ sounds in there. Even though their songwriting is not that original, it sounds really good to me.

Lars and the Hands of Light
This band plays playful indie pop with upbeat melodies and danceable rhythms. The melodies are well composed and the chord changes are not the most conventional ones, but it still sounds very familiar.

Gasolin'
This long term rock band plays all sorts of music from classic rock to Beatles-type baroque pop. It's all sung in Danish. The melodies are quite interesting but I guess you might get more out of their songs if you understand Danish.

D-A-D
This hard rock band is quite tacky for the most part, but some of their songs are still quite good. When they show more of their folky acoustic side, the songs sound good, but the vocalist doesn't really know how to tone it down.

Grand Avenue
Grand Avenue makes excellent and quite typical late 90's/early-00's power pop where the guitars chime playfully over accurately beating drums and pulsing bass lines. The overall sound is quite similar to bands like Doves.

Sneakers
This band is probably the most 80's sounding band on this list. The drums have that 80's echo and the clear synth pianos sound a bit tacky. The clear female vocals are airy. The reason I'm adding this band to the list is that their songwriting is actually quite interesting.

Junior Senior
Junior Senior is a pop band that uses happy and upbeat melodies over danceable beats. I would maybe categorise this more as an indie pop band, because of absence of electronic sounds. it's a bit too happy for my taste, but I guess they still sound quite good.

Analogik
Analogies plays strange electronically spiced gipsy music where the saxophones create playful sounds over mock-retro radio sounds. They also include some vinyl scratching and electronic beats in the mix, but the melodies are pure gipsy-music.

Æter
This indie folk band plays dark melodies over acoustic country guitars. The deep baritone vocals on top of those storytelling songs sound very good. It's not necessarily the most serious sound, but I like the playfulness.

Sort Sol
Sort Sol plays aggressive rock music that mixes grunge sounds to rhythmic rock and DJ stylings. At times the sound is  quite similar to Nine Inch Nails. The melodies are not perhaps the most interesting ones.

Decorate.Decorate
This band has a strange name that's a bit annoying. Despite of their name, their music is quite interesting. Overdriven huge guitar walls punch you in the face. The melodies are highly melancholic.

Windermere
Windermere makes ominous sounding post-rock where the electric guitars riff slow riffs while the high-pitched and echoey vocals are pure as air. i really enjoy the quiet bits where the voice is left alone with piano sounds.

Seven Mile Journey
Seven Mile Journey makes typical mid-00's post rock where the overdriven echoey electric guitars chime playfully over melancholic melodies and dramatic pianos. This is great music for moments when you're feeling tired and just want to focus on sound.

Speaker Bite Me
Speaker Bite Me has the sounds of a post-rock band, but they actually also include quite a lot of lyrics in their songs. The drum beats are interesting and the bass lines and guitars play interesting melody loops above the rhythms.

Tres.B
Tres.B plays interesting post-rock with rough guitar sounds and pounding drums. The clear and echoey female vocals sound ominously beautiful. If you like bands like Esben and the Witch, you're bound to like this too.

The Kissaway Trail
The Kissaway trail makes quite traditional sounding post-rock music where the guitar walls play between quiet and loud. The drums play aggressively fast beats. They do have vocals as well, but the high indie tones make it more of an instrument among others.

Mimas
Mimas plays quiet and beautiful music with strange rap-like, but still sung, vocals that sound exactly like the vocals in the band Why?. The piano melodies are beautiful although they're quite simple. This is indie music in its most original.

Mofus
Mofus makes moody and interesting melancholic music that sounds like some of the 90's trip-hop bands, but with absolutely beautiful echoey vocals that remind me of the amazing Julee Cruise. This is one of the most amazing bands on this list.

Under Byen
Under byen makes beautiful and quiet indie pop, where the female vocals tremble as so vulnerable that they could just burst out crying at any second. This kind of emotion is difficult to capture on a record.

Broken Twin
Broke Twin is quiet and beautiful music where every movement on the guitar is audible. The vocals are tremendously beautiful as well. This is for all of you who enjoy sounds at their purest. Quiet and relaxing.

Cancer
I don't know who wants to name their band Cancer. Then again the melodies are probably melancholic enough for the name to be suitable. The vocals sound like the trembling voice of Antony from Antony & the Johnsons, but the instrumentations are a bit more funky.

Søren Bebe
Søren Bebe plays beautiful piano ballads that have some influences from classical and jazz music. This kind of music sounds like it could be used in independent films. It's also very relaxing and inspiring.

Jakob Anderskov Trio
This jazz combo plays quiet jazz ballads where the piano takes the lead on melodies. The bass lines are also excellent and I don't really have anything bad to say about the drummer either. Modern jazz that knows it's influences.

Thomas Blachman
This jazz musician's music sounds a lot like the greats of the 50's and 60's. There is a lot of same kind of minimalism as in the old Miles Davis records. This, however, also has some vocals, that I think take away the otherwise beautiful mood.

Jesper Bodilsen
Jesper Bodiless makes modern jazz music with emphasis given to double bass. The bass is actually the lead instrument in this music. Blinking pianos and guitars just give the rhythm and leave bass and saxophone to do the melody work.

Christina Von Bülow
This jazz musician makes somewhat cheesy jazz ballads, where the saxophone plays quite simple melodies over bass lines and quiet guitar. The result is very pleasant, yet it's not very original. It sounds a bit too commercial for my taste.

AC Trio
AC Trio plays kind of experimental jazz where the piano takes the lead as the mad melody maker, while the bass keeps the rhythm and melody in place. the drums are quite playful and symbols are used a lot more than other drums.

Thomas Clausen Trio
Thomas Clausen Trio makes quite traditional jazz music and they also play some well-known jazz standards. they do, however, give their own spices to the classics. All the musicians are amazing in their instruments.

Carsten Dahl
Carsten Dahl plays beautiful piano ballads. This is the kind of music for films that are greater than life. I don't know if his music has been used in films, but I really think it should have been. Great music to just listen to laying down.

Christina Dahl & co.
This band is somewhat of a super band including lots of different musicians, but the result is quite amazing. It's all about jazz, but still there's a more modern vibe to it. There are some elements there that sound more like trip-hop.

Jakob Dinesen Trio
Jakob Dinesen Trio plays playful and quite experimental jazz music. The trumpet soars around like a crazy bird in the room while the drums and bass keep up the hectic and fast rhythms with amazing accuracy.

Chris Minh Doky
Chris Minh Doky's jazz combo plays quite modern sounding jazz music where the bass, piano and drums work seamlessly together. As a bass player I have to give credit to Vietnamese-Danish Chris Minh Doky, whose bass lines take the lead in otherwise brilliant combo.

Niels Lan Doky Trio
This trio plays quite conventional, yet super masterful jazz music. The piano takes the lead here even though the bass and drums also have their significant part to play. This is the kind of jazz that really knows the history of the genre, but still manages to make some interesting things out of it.

Jørgen Emborg
This jazz musician makes quite modern sounding jazz music with funky elements. The bass, piano and drums keep the soulful pulsing going on while the horn section and guitar give their best in creating the melodies.

Mikkel Ploug Group
This is probably as experimental as it gets in the jazz I listen to. The melodies sound like a mad man. They jump from here to there without clear patterns. This music is interesting enough to listen to, but it's not necessarily for beginner jazz listeners.

Jacob Fischer Trio
You wouldn't expect this kind of latino guitar jazz to come from Denmark. There are some strong flamenco elements in this music. I do enjoy the pure talent in guitar playing, but I don't know if I would have patience to listen to full albums of this.

Ib Glindemann
This jazz musician makes beautiful big band jazz with ambitiously big sounds. It sounds quite old fashioned, but I still enjoy the coordination, the talent and the showmanship of this music. This is the music of old Hollywood films.

Ole Kock Hansen
This jazz musician makes playful piano-driven jazz. The melodies are quite upbeat and the tempo stays quite high all the time. I think, however, that they could be a tad more experimental, because now I get a bit board after a couple of minutes.

Bent Jædig
This old time jazz saxophone player really knows how to play high quality jazz. Quick tempo changes and melodies that use whole lot of scales and play around them. The bass player in his band is also very good.

Jan Kaspersen Trio
This jazz combo plays interesting melodies. It sounds very modern and interesting without being too experimental. The electric bass brings it's own sound to make it all sound a bit more modern. There are some catchy hooks as well.

Benjamin Koppel Quintet
This quintet plays playful and interesting jazz with a main focus on the saxophone. The drums are also very impressive, while the piano and bass kind of stay in the background. This is the kind of music that you appreciate for the pure talent of the players.

Søren Kjærgaard
Søren Kjærgaard plays beautiful jazz ballads on a piano. There are lots of dreamlike runnings on the keyboard that make his music sound quite magical and shows his full talent. There are definitely some classical elements in his music as well.

Jesper Lundgaard Trio
Jesper Lundgaard plays jazz bass that is accompanied by subtle guitars. There's playfulness in the bass playing like I've probably never heard before. I just have to appreciate the amazing talent that this bass player has.

Offpiste Gurus
This jazz combo plays funky and quite commercial songs with simple melodies and hippy female vocals. I'm not really that sure if this should be categorised as jazz, because of its commercial qualities, but the horn section really knows what they're doing.

Palle Mikkelborg
Palle Mikkelborg makes atmospheric music with a jazz saxophone. The background is more like ambient music. A calming and relaxed organ sound in the background can help you to get into a hypnotic trance.

Erik Moseholm
Erik Moseholm makes wild and fiery jazz that resembles the prohibition era speakeasies. The big band plays amazingly together. The horn sections are the most apparent talent in the band, but I also want to give my good-os to the bass player, vibraphonist and the guitar player.

Nicolai Munch-Housen
This jazz musician makes playful and skilfully played jazz music where the bass and saxophone play simultaneous melodies that fit together seamlessly even though they're playing two different roles. The drummer really just keeps it all together.

Lars Møller Group
This jazz group makes beautiful and quiet jazz ballads where all the instruments play quite minimalistically. This way you get to savour every small sound in the music. The smooth saxophones and clear pianos just melt away into a fairyland.

Alex Riel & Stefan Pasborg
This music can be categorised as a festival of rhythm. The drums have a significant role to play while the rock organ plays on top with crazy melodies. Even with the organ, though, rhythm seems to be the main thing.

Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen
This jazz musician plays quiet and relaxing jazz melodies where the soft double bass and piano take turns. The bass lines are amazingly inventive and playful. I would hope for a bit more wild bits somewhere in between, but even the way it is, this music is very fun to listen to.

Hugo Rasmussen
Hugo Rasmussen plays the double bass skilfully with a bow. The trumpet on top of it is completely secondary to the bass. It's all very minimalistic, but when they get started, they create a nice atmosphere of the old Hollywood films.

Simon Spang-Hanssen 5-tet
This crazy jazz combo plays amazingly crazy melodies with horn section playfully playing around while the drums and bass keep the backbone of the band in sync. The drummer is also very very talented.

Nils Jørgen Steen
This jazz musician plays quite cheesy and slow jazz ballads. I'm almost expecting a deep baritone voice on top of this music to come in as the narrator voice of film noir. Great music for walking on the rainy streets by yourself.

Jesper Thilo
The saxophone is the main deal here even though there's some vocal work as well. The drums and bass keep the rhythm going while the vocals and saxophone do all the inventive work. It's quite commercial.

Simon Toldam Trio
Simon Toldam Trio makes quite modern and inventive jazz music where the piano and drums create some crazy rhythms together with the double bass. Rhythm is definitely the main thing in this combo even though the melodies are not bad either.

Kasper Tranberg
Kasper Tranberg plays jazz music that is both traditional and quite innovative. The horn sections are playful and fun and the fast drummer keeps the rhythm intact beautifully. The bass player kind of stays in the corner.

Hans Ulrik
Hans Ulrik makes modern sounding jazz music that gives the airy and echoey saxophone lots of room while the drums, piano and bass just set the rhythm on the background. I'm not saying that there aren't other talents in here, but the saxophonist is just the loudest.

Mads Vinding Trio
Mads Vinding Trio plays beautiful jazz ballads with a lot going on. The piano and bass are almost competing against each other for the attention. The drummer is also very good, but he's still just keeping the rhythm together.

Jens Winther
Jens Winther plays innovative melodies with a saxophone while the rhythm section works tightly together keeping the rhythm up while also making some innovative tricks. This is quite experimental and very skilfully played jazz.
