Texas, US

Texas is not probably the first state that comes to mind when talking about great music hubs in the US. Texas, however, has one of the most throwing music scenes in the US. Of course there are so many people in that state that it's no wonder why so much music was born there, but I'm sure that long tradition in country music and general hipster coolness of Austin have their part to play as well. The music scene of Texas is quite varied and my playlist has everything from folk to country and from electro to noise and heavy, not forgetting different rock genres. This is one of the biggest playlists I have in this blog. Almost eight hours of excellent music from the state that is generally viewed only through its ridiculous conservative politics shows that there's much more in Texas than you might think. Here's the playlist: Texas

Shearwater
Shearwater plays atmospheric and dream-like indie rock that plays with quiet piano ballads changing to massive sundials. The high-toned vocals resemble those of Antony & the Johnsons. Some of the songs sound like they were from a fantasy film. They use, quite skilfully, string instruments and glockenspiels in addition to more usual band instruments.

Midlake
Midlake is one of the greatest melancholic dream-indie groups of all times. Their melodies are beautiful and vocal harmonies are very skilful. They use instruments such as flutes in the midst of guitar driven folk-indie. Some of the songs sound very similar, but I'm not bothered by that, since it all sounds great.

The Mars Volta
I'm not a huge fan of all the songs by this band, but they have a couple of absolutely beautiful songs. Televators and The Widow are among the greatest melancholic indie jewels I've ever heard. Their more aggressive songs include strange rhythm changes and progressive elements and sometimes their noisy sound is close to heavy metal even.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
As ridiculous as this band's name is, this version that you see here is not even half of it. Still, they manage to make quite good music. I don't think all of their repertoire is genius, but they certainly have some excellent melancholic indie tunes. Again, to me their slower and more atmospheric songs work much better.

Wiretree
Writer plays ominous and dark indie rock with pop-oriented melodies. The chiming electric guitars and trembling vocals bring to mind the Scottish band Travis. It definitely sounds quite northern and I'm a bit surprised to hear this kind of music from a Southern state.

The American Spirit
The American Spirit plays melancholic indie folk with many similarities to bands such as Bright Eyes. Their use of rock organs in the background give them nice originality compared to purely guitar based bands in this genre.

The Wooden Birds
The Wooden Birds play atmospheric Americana folk with strong emphasis on rhythms. It's all acoustic, but they still manage to sound quite modern. The clear vocals interpret great melodies even when the guitars in the background are really more focused on rhythms.

Seryn
Serene plays uplifting indie folk with great emphasis on rhythms. They also use quite skilfully picked acoustic guitars. There's a proper tempo and airy sound in this band's songs. It somehow sounds a bit Scandinavian for some reason.

Okkervil River
Okkervil River is one of my favourite indie folk bands. They use a lot of traditional folk aesthetics in their songs such as banjos and picked acoustic guitars, but at the same time they have high tempos in many of their songs making it sound more like indie rock.

Matt the Electrician
The sounds of this artist are a bit cliché, but it all still sounds very beautiful. The melodies are very beautiful and the lyrics are well constructed. The vocals have just enough raspy qualities while still maintaining high and clear tones.

Townes Van Zandt
Townes Van Zandt is one of the most legendary folk musicians of all times, although maybe not that well-known to general public. He's brilliant on the guitar and his baritone voice interprets emotions beautifully. His sounds are more modern than many of his contemporaries'.

The Lennings
The Lennings play endearing quiet Americana folk. Guitars and mandolins chime while the slide guitar soars in the background. The vocals are calm and clear. The melodies are wistfully beautiful. This is the kind of music that you would expect to hear on a camp fire with no worries in the world.

Fox and the Bird
Fox and the Bird plays quite hipstery folk music with melodica, accordion and light acoustic guitars and mandolins. The melodies are catchy, yet simple. This is great music for those who love simple beauty of melodies that get caught in your head.

Buttercup
This is the kind of melancholic folk music that lifted its head again in the 2010's. its roots are strongly in the 60's folk tradition, while the sounds are more modern. The songs are mainly acoustic, but it all goes electric at least in the choruses.

Wild Child
This endearing folk duo plays beautifully simple music with beautiful vocal harmonies. The female vocals are absolutely beautiful, having that airy quality that makes the music sound completely otherworldly.

Jesse Woods
Strumming acoustic guitars and airy and echoey vocals. There's great kind of raspy tone in the singing voice, while the backing vocals are higher and clearer. There are great similarities to artists such as Bon Iver, but the music is not quite as crushingly sad.

Peter and the Wolf
Peter and the Wolf use quite traditional folk instruments, but their sound is more modern than that. They have some blues influences and soft vocals. The use of double bass is excellent and the male and female vocals are carefully constructed.

Jarrod Dickenson
Jarrod Dickenson is an old-school singer-songwriter making melancholic and beautiful songs by accompanying his singing with fantastically picked acoustic guitar. There are some additional instruments, such as piano and electric guitar, but the main emphasis is given to the man himself.

The Oh Hellos
Although the band is quite ridiculously named, don't be put off by them. They make great subtle and quiet folk music with soft and melodic vocals. The vocal harmonies are beautiful and guitars are skilfully played.

Shakey Graves
Delicate and breaking singing voice dominates this music. On the background there is a quiet guitar picked masterfully. The sounds are quite authentic, but modern at the same time. The rhythms and vocal harmonies are innovative.

Alison May
Alison May is a singer-songwriter with quite a traditional approach to her genre. picked acoustic guitars, lo-fi vocals and innovative melodies come together in her music. The music really reminds me of summer and care-free days on holidays.

Spoon
Spoon is definitely more a grower than a shower. What I mean by that is that it takes a while to get to appreciate their music fully. Their music relies on loops and riffs, but some of the melodies are fantastic as well. Once you get familiar with their style of growing songs that never quite reach their climax, you learn to love this indie rock band.

Ben Kweller
Ben Kweller's indie rock varies from quiet acoustic ballads to full-on overdriven guitars and college rock styled aesthetics. his melodies are fantastic and lyrics are interesting to listen to. He can even manage quite a good rock yell.

Viet Ruse
Viet Ruse is quite a typical indie rock band that relies heavily on electric guitar riffs and disco drumming. Even so, they have their original sound that is mainly due to post-punk style vocals and masterful guitar use.

Charlie Belle
Charlie Belle plays melodic indie rock that has some folk influences. Her vocals are very skilful and I'm sure they would bend to some soul singing as well even if this is more straightforwardly melodic simple stuff.

The Polyphonic Spree
This band is very English sounding to be from Texas. For a long time I thought they were from UK. Their massive sound is filled with innovative use of various instruments and the nasal vocals are perfect for this kind of danceable indie. They sometimes sound a lot like Arcade Fire.

Voxtrot
Foxtrot plays melodic indie rock with quite poppy sounds. Even though the main instrument in most songs seems to be guitar, they give quite a big emphasis for the piano as well. At times it sounds a lot like Nada Surf's later albums.

Tiger Waves
Tiger Waves combines surf rock sounds to 60's style art rock. The sounds are quite lo-fi, but not in an annoying way. The vocals have melodic structures eve if the guitars run on simple loop-like riffs. This is great music for the summer.

One Hundred Flowers
One Hundred Flowers plays absolutely lovely indie rock with beautiful and endearing melodies. They also use fantastic synthesiser sounds in their songs in the style of bands like Grandaddy. The vocal harmonies on the other hand remind me of Belle & Sebastian.

Fastball
This band is mainly known for their 90's hit single The Way. Most of their other stuff is more American in a traditional rock kind of way, but there are some jewels in their repertoire. Their songs sound sometimes even a bit like Ryan Adams' rockier songs.

The Baker Family
The Baker Family plays groovy indie rock with treble-heavy bass, disco-style guitars and drums and humming space synthesisers. Vocal harmonies have been composed well and the instruments are skilfully played, but I would hope for a bit more melodic approach.

Wild Moccasins
Wild Moccasins plays new-wave inspired indie rock with quite apparent 80's influences. At times it even seems to have traditional shoe-gaze aesthetics. The leading female vocals are high-pitched, but not piercingly.

The Bubbles
The Bubbles play quite traditional kind of indie rock, where the electric guitars and melodic bass lines accompany laconic vocals. In choruses the overdriven guitars reach a bit more enthusiastic and original levels.

The Cartographers
The Cartographers play 90's style indie rock with some post-rock spices. Piano takes a strong role, while the electric guitars have quite grungy overdrive sound. The lead singer's vocals sound a lot like those of Billy Corgan.

Ume
Ume has an absolutely lovely sound that combines influences from dream pop, shoegaze and indie pop. The raspy female vocals remind me of Julia Stone and Blonde Redhead. The melodies are quite melancholic but in a very beautiful way.

Explosions in the Sky
This is one of the most well-known post-rock bands out there. Along with Mogwai, they ruled the post-rock scene of mid 00's. Their music isn't relying too much on overdrive walls, even though there is also some room for that as well. These songs are more melodic and beautiful. Echo is everything.

Hotel, Hotel
This post-rock band plays atmospheric songs with ominous sounds and a mix of classical and band instruments. This is the kind of music that really needs careful listening to get everything out. It changes from beautiful quietness to loud noise experiments.

Yes Inferno
Yes Inferno plays instrumental post-rock with quiet to loud electric guitars. There's a lot of echo in the sounds. This music doesn't really work as background noise. You need to listen to every little bit of distortion and noise to appreciate it fully.

Balmorhea
I would categorise this band as post-rock, but the sounds are really different from all the other bands in this genre. Balmorhea uses classical music to make dream-like melodies with beautiful hope. The electric guitars are there, but they sore clear above everything else.

The Revival Hour
When I first heard the first verses of this band's album Scorpio Little Devil, I was sure that here is one of the best new bands out there. Unfortunately I learned the opening song Hold Back was quite unique. But just because of this song, you should really tune into them. Absolutely great soulful indie with horns and strings.

Max Frost
Max Frost plays quite modern indie-pop with classy sounds. The drums sound a bit artificial, but the guitars and electronic noises make it very interesting. It actually sounds a lot like Gorillaz at times, although this is more approachable.

Little Brave
Little Brave plays indie soul (if there is such a genre). Anyway, the vocals are beautiful and the poppy soul melodies have been played by traditional indie pop instruments with heavy emphasis on piano. The lyrics are also worth listening to.

Leon Bridges
Leon Bridges plays sunny and relaxed soul with quite timeless sounds. I like the fact that the instruments sound very authentic. you can really hear the music as it's played. Especially the very authentic sounding drums sound great.

St. Vincent
St. Vincent has been one of the most original singer-songwriters of the last years. For some reason I have not been that excited about her music though. Maybe it's because much more emphasis is given to sounds and rhythms than to melodies. Anyway, great modern indie pop with soulful twist.

Norah Jones
Norah Jones became known throughout the world with her debut album Come Away With Me. Her songs are jazzy, but very approachable and simple. Her great singing voice is probably the main thing here. Emotional piano ballads done well.

Willie Nelson
Willie Nelson is one of the legends of country and folk music. His raspy baritone carries a great amount of emotion while he is not really that good a singer technically. He has made a lot of music in different genres, but I think he's at his best playing his guitar and singing softly.

Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash is one of the most legendary singers of all times. His baritone voice is known everywhere in the world. The country songs are very simple, but he manages to blow amazing energy in to his performances. One of the absolute highlights of his career was his gig in Folsom Prison.

Whiskey Shivers
This country band plays excellent fast country with excellent picking of guitar, banjos and double bass. The melodies are in the style of old railway folk even though the style is more modern and clearly understands the camp value of their music.

Nick Gaitan & The Umbrella Man
Excellent crime country (if that is a genre). Fast country jams, slide guitars and excellent lyrics sung in duets. The melodies know the traditions of the old Americana, but the sounds have been made more modern.

Not Half Bad
This lo-fi country-folk band sounds excellent, while it's all very simple and not very original. The lead vocalist has a cool raspy voice that is the main attraction for this band. It's still all very enjoyable if you like political songs that have that bar brawl quality.

The Dirty River boys
The Dirty River Boys play fantastic country-folk where beautifully picked metal string acoustic works together with a harmonica, fiddle and steady drumming. The soft sound of double bass gives it's own spice to the concoction.

Bird Dog
This band plays quite traditional country with slide guitars and all. Still, you can hear that they don't take themselves too seriously, which is great. There are also some more modern indie folk stylings that make this band a bit more interesting than your average country band down the pub.

Lyle Lovett
Lyle Lovett has a clear and beautiful singing voice and he uses it to sing absolutely beautiful airy country ballads. The sounds have some 80's influences and at times I even get that Bruce Springsteen vibe,

Bonnie Whitmore
Bonnie Whitmore plays quite traditional US south-style country music with electronic rock instruments. The rock organ together with the fiddle gives this music its sound that is original at the same time as it's the most used sound ever.

Sunny Sweeney
This is as southern as it gets. Sunny Sweeney's heavy southern accent sings country-rock melodies while the slide guitars and walking bass keep up the jams. I couldn't have listened to something like this few years ago, but now I have actually come to appreciate this campy approach to the heart of the bible belt.

Janis Joplin
Janis Joplin is one of the most appreciated rock musicians of all times. Her unique rock yelling style is topped by no-one. It's a shame that Joplin died so young, since her last album Pearl promised great things ahead. Her music is quite traditional rock with some blues stylings.

Stray Dog
This 70's heavy rock band relies on rough guitar riffs and solos, while the backgrounds are more soulful. The sounds anticipate the late 70's rock opera sounds, while this is still a bit more traditional. It's a bit tacky around the edges, but a good piece of musical history.

Edgar Winter
Edgar Winter is one of the Winter brothers that play skilful blues rock with crying electric guitars. His music is a mix of traditional Southern rock and soulful melodies. The skilful guitar-playing takes the main stage from songwriting though.

Meat Loaf
Meat Loaf is one of the legends of classic rock opera movement. His songs are quite traditional rock n' roll, but the masterful saxophone playing, excellent piano licks and excellent raspy vocals raise Meat Loaf above the average rock performer.

ZZ Top
The bearded trio is as picky AND as cool as it gets. It's just hard to decide which. They play bluesy rock n' roll with excellent overdriven guitars and southern rock stylings. The guitar solos are quite fantastic.

Johnny Winter
Johnny Winter is even more masterful with his guitar than his brother. His music is also more blues-driven as is his raspy singing voice. I don't know if the music itself is that interesting, but the guitar playing sure is fantastic.

The Quaker City Night Hawks
This band explores the history of blues and makes fantastic stoner-rock sounding blues songs out of it with a modern twist. It's all quite heavy and rough. This is great hypnotic music with strong roots. Some of the electric guitars have gotten influences from 60's psychedelic rock.

Those Howlings
This psychedelic blues-rock band has strong roots in old 60's garage psychedelia and blues. It's much more strongly rock though. Overdriven guitars and lo-fi raunchy vocals make this sound very rough and hard, but only in a good way.

Balaclavas
Balaclavas play noisy punk art rock. They have some similarities to 80's noise bands such as Sonic Youth, but the sound is a bit more modern. it's not the most pleasant sounding music out there, but it's still enjoyable to hear something quite different.

Female Demand
Female Demand plays rough and heavy noise rock with great emphasis on stoner-riffs and pounding drumming. There are some psychedelia elements in their music, although this really is quite far away from 60's hippy era.

The Grasshopper Lies Heavy
This fantastic noise rock band combines heavy post-rock to avant-garde noise. It's all very dark and psychotic, but beautiful at the same time, because of black despair. For people who don't generally like heavy, this might be a bit too noisy.

Pantera
Pantera is one of the best known trash metal bands in the world. To me it was always the one step up from bands like Metallica and because of that it was never one of my favourites. Still, there are melodic structures and great pounding riffs that I like and it's not just growling.

Ella Minnow
Ella Minnow plays melodic and psychedelic indie rock with some psychedelic spices. The nasal vocals sound fantastic. There are great similarities to bands such as Modest Mouse, but it's a bit more easily approachable.

Grape St.
Grape St. plays psychedelic indie rock with echoey lo-fi guitars and bluesy drum and bass structures. The choruses are much more melodic than their verses. It all sounds very English to be a band from Texas.

Angor Wat
Angor Wat plays lo-fi post-punk with fast tempos and treble filled electric guitars. The baritone vocals are not very melodic, but the main deal with this band is the attitude anyway. Anyone who has ever been an anguished teenager knows how to appreciate this.

The 13th Floor Elevators
This is one of the best psychedelic rock bands of the 60's. Their studio technique was very advanced for that time even if this sounds a bit old nowadays. This captures the essence of drug-filled hippy era. The guitars sound fantastically authentic.

The Escatones
The Escatones play lo-fi indie rock with some surf-style guitars. The bass has high treble and drums play simple indie comps. This is the kind of music to sing along to while drunk. More fine-tuned sounds could ruin everything.

Amplified Heat
Amplified Heat plays bluesy psychedelic rock in the 60's style. Electric guitars are raw and authentic, while the vocals are raunchy without any kind of professionalism. Attitude takes the forefront in this music.

The Rich Hands
The Rich Hands play rough sounding rock with surprisingly pop-oriented melodies. If the sounds would be slightly softer, we could be talking about a surf rock band that plays melodic summer music.

Bubble Puppy
Bubble Puppy plays excellent 60's style psychedelic rock combined to hard rock sounds of the time. Progressive rock genre is probably the most imminent sound, but they have definitely listened to their fare share of bands like The Who and Jimi Hendrix.

Roky Erickson
The frontman of The 13th Floor Elevators maintained the psychedelic sounds in the guitars in his solo career, but the music itself moved to a different direction combining glam rock aesthetics to rock opera sounds.

Hacienda
Hacienda has raunchy stoner rock sounds, but the groove is straight from T-Rex's glam rock book of songwriting. The overdriven bass and high treble guitars play groovy melodies while the vocals rock out as well as they could.

The Black Angels
This is one of the greatest psychedelic stoner rock bands of the recent years. Their album cover for Phosphene Dream alone get you to the mood. The opening track on that album, Bad Vibrations, is a masterpiece that makes you crave for more. Bit disappointingly, no other jewels like this exist.

The Reverend Horton Heat
This band is difficult to categorise. They use some surf-rock sounds to play fast gypsy-influenced rockabilly. If there's one band that I find a bit similar, it is the Finnish band Laika and the Cosmonauts.

Chingon
Quentin Tarantino is fantastic in his capability to lift unknown bands to the main roles in his films. Chignon's Malaguena Salerosa was played masterfully in Kill Bill, vol. 2. This latin rock masterpiece manages to be melancholic and sad, while at the same time being proud and uncompromising piece of excellent rock music.

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
This combo plays absolutely fantastic funk music with strong rock n' roll basis. The vocals are raspy and extremely masterful. The bass lines are absolutely amazing. Songwriting-wise, it may not be the most interesting band around, but what they lose in that department, they gain in skilful playing.

Roy Orbison
Roy Orbison is known to everyone from his masterful hit song Oh, Pretty Woman. This is old school rock n' roll done right. It manages to be danceable and loud while maintaining catchy melodies and originality in sounds.

Buddy Holly
Even though Buddy Holly is a legend, not many people have actually listened to his music and may not even know which hit songs are his. I love his melodic wuss rock n' roll songs like Everyday. These surely are the influence for many of today's indie pop singer- songwriters.

T-Bone Walker
T-Bone Walker plays masterful blues guitar. His guitar is almost matched by his full and raunchy vocals. This is the kind of blues that no-one has been able to make lately. There's a great sense of melody and rhythm.

Lightnin' Hopkins
Lightnin' Hopkins plays excellent old time blues with acoustic guitar. This music has worked as a major influence on bands like Led Zeppelin. The guitar playing is very masterful, while at the same time the vocals improvise beautifully.

Mance Lipscomb
Mance lips comb plays old-time railway blues with a folky attitude. This is the kind of music you would come to expect from someone sitting on their porch in Texas. Highly hickey, but at the same time very appealing and well-played.

Blind Willie Johnson
Blind Willie Johnson uses guitar to make sounds that no-one else can make. His kind of slide guitar is completely unique while his soulful vibrato vocals improvise on top of it all. This kind of music has been the direct influence for Coen Brothers film O Brother Where art Thou.

Woody Guthrie
This man is a classic of old-time folk music. Unfortunately the recordings there are of his music are so crappy that you can't fully appreciate his talent. Fortunately a lot of people have made some more modern versions of his hobo lullabies.

Some Say Leland
Some Say Leland plays quiet and hypnotic acoustic guitar driven ballads. The vocals are calm and beautiful. This is the kind of music to listen to on the sofa while staring at the ceiling after a long day of work.

The Loblolly Boy
The Loblolly Boy has a great soft voice which he accompanies with his country-folk styled acoustic guitar. you can hear from the melodies that this is quite modern, even though the sounds could as easily be from years back.

The Eastern Sea
The Eastern Sea plays artistic indie folk with high-pitched male vocals. There's something extremely hypnotic in these rising songs with a lot of echo. The frontman is clearly someone who has sat for a long time in his bedroom just playing guitar and singing.

Marmalakes
Marmalakes plays melodic singer-songwriter style of indie pop-rock. Main emphasis is on acoustic guitar strumming, but there are some electric instruments as well. The laconic vocals are very cool. The sounds are quite English rather than American.

Will Butler
Will Butler plays relaxed singer-songwriter songs with Beatles-style melodies and vocal harmonies. There's a strong resemblance to 60's baroque pop, while at the same time this sounds more individually constructed and less of a band effort.

We Leave at Midnight
This indie pop band plays innovative baroque pop with interesting melodies and vocal harmonies. The sounds owe much to the 60's psychedelic pop scene and bands like The Zombies. They also use quite experimental instruments at times.

Bad Breaks
Bad Breaks plays rhythmic indie pop with quite relaxed mood. The vocals are a bit lo-fi with a bit of laconic nasal. This is more storytelling than interesting sound play. Authentic suburban cellar indie styled effort.

Big Soy
Big Soy uses electronic instruments over their endearing indie pop, where the vocals are fragile and strange. This is the kind of music that brings to mind those lazy afternoons of staring at the clouds in the park.

Fishboy
Fishboy is a mixture of indie rock, college rock and power pop. The melodies are catchy, compositions simple and guitars take the lead. It's all great as a party music, but it doesn't really bring that much novelty to the musical world.

The Hawks (Of Holy Rosary)
This band plays upbeat indie rock with lo-fi aesthetics. The bass lines are pretty good and the vocals have just enough of that great roughness to make the music interesting. the lyrics are quite witty and funny in a pretty immature way.

Islands & Tigers
Islands & Tigers play fast indie rock with strong guitar emphasis. The bass lines are quite high and filled with treble. This represents the cool indie wave of late 00's, when guitar indie adopted echoey sounds of 90's shoegaze.

Sparta
Sparta is one of the cool bands of early 00's that combined heavy guitars and vocals to melodic structures. This could be perceived as the second coming of grunge only 10 years after the original one.

At the Drive-In
Like Sparta, this band uses quite heavy sounds in their progressive rock. The vocals rise up to out right yells from time to time. The singer formed The Mars Volta ofter this band. There are similarities between the two bands, but At the Drive-In is less melodic and more aggressive.

Bowling for Soup
Bowling for Soup is one of the best college rock bands ever. Their songs have catchy melodies and heavy guitars, while the lyrics resemble all the bad teenage films of the 90's. Their song Girl All the Bad Guys Want was a major hit.

The Ugly Beats
The Ugly Beats plays fast-tempo indie rock with rough electric guitars and slightly out-of-tune vocals. They also use rock organs on the background. This is great and simple music for having fun. It's not too serious, but not a joke either.

A. Sinclair
A. Sinclair plays power pop that has some influences from modern über-cool indie rock. Their melodies are sunny and upbeat. The guitars resemble the guitar hero times of the early 90's, while the rest of the sounds are more modern with their echoes.

Quiet Company
Quiet Company plays fast-tempo indie rock with simple and catchy melodies and storytelling lyrics. There are apparent similarities to bands like The Gaslight Anthem, although it's all a bit more Arcade Fire than that.

Dome Dwellers
Dome Dwellers play quite progressive indie rock with strange rhythms and interesting guitar sounds. the vocals do not move in the most typical lines which makes the music quite interesting, while at the same time maybe not that honest.

Muhammadali
This shoegaze, college-rock hybrid has some overdriven guitars and rough vocals with songs that would be able to make huge audiences jump up and down and sing along. It's all a bit lo-fi and rough, but still very enjoyable.

Zlam Dunk
Zlam Dunk is the embodiment of cool and original indie rock with innovative use of different electric guitar sounds and styles. Their vocals are not very melodic and they mainly just growl the lyrics out, while the music itself is very melodic.

Pop Pistol
Pop Pistol is like the electronic brother of Placebo. The vocalist sounds a lot like Brian Molko and the melodies could well be from later Placebo albums. The sounds, however, resemble late 90's electronic music with clubbing-style beats and crying electric guitars.

Diego Bernal
Diego Bernal makes DJ-style music with heavy emphasis on strange rhythms and weird samples. it's all about modern sounds, so naturally I'm not that much of a fan, being a huge melody-listener. I can still appreciate the strange studio techniques.

Boyfrndz
Possibly one of the worst band-names of all times. Still, I suggest to take a listen, because this band actually sounds quite original. Dark melodies and complex rhythms, while the high-pitched vocals sing melancholic melodies.

Dance Like Robots
Dance Like Robots is an indie rock band that combines the disco beats of indie disco music with innovative guitar walls and psychedelia of post-rock bands and the bass lines of post-punk revival. For electric guitar lovers, this band is a must.

A.M. Architect
A.M. Architect is an electronic indie band with high emphasis on rhythms. Their sounds are very cool and they use innovative studio techniques. The melodies are not necessarily the most interesting part of this music.

Conner Youngblood
Conner Youngblood is a modern indie pop artist, whose music is filled with interesting rhythmic sounds and echoey melodies. It's all very cool and modern, but I just don't get those shivers, because the melodies are quite dull.

The Tontons
This band knows how to use echoey clear electric guitars. Their melodies are dream-like and beautiful, while their rhythmic section is modern and electronic. This band actually reminds me quite a lot of Beach House.

Blackstone Rangers
Blackstone Rangers play dream-like electronica with strange samples and effects. They also use authentic electric guitars, but the main focus is on psychedelic sounds created using various toys such as effects and vocoders.

Deer Vibes
Deer Vibes is cool indie rock with orchestral sounds. They use quite a few brass instruments as well as glockenspiels to give their electric guitars some company. It's mainly instrumental, but there are some lyrics as well.

Equals
Equals is an electronica band that uses a variety of different strange instruments in their music. It's quite melodic for this kind of music, but still I think the rhythms take the lead. For friends of well produced sounds, this is great.

Chipper Jones
Chipper Jones plays uptempo indie pop with modern and echoey sounds. it's mainly played by electric guitars, but the guitars have such strange sounds and they're played in monotonous loops, that they sound more electronic.

Mother Falcon
Mother Falcon plays huge and orchestrated symphonic indie rock. There are great emotions in this music. This goes for the fans of Arcade Fire as well as for fans of Sufjan Stevens. Excellent use of a variety of instruments.

Matthew Dear
Matthew Dear is one of the coolest electronic music artists at the moment. His songs are quite simplistic, but rely heavily on cool and echoey sounds and DJ techniques. If you believe that less is more, this might be for you.

S U R V I V E
This synthesiser band has definitely listened their fair share of old 70's synthesiser greats such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. Dark and industrial melodies played on analog synthesisers and electronic toys.

Ray Lynch
Ray Lynch is one of the legendary synthesiser gurus. His music is the future music of the space age. This was back when electronic music was just beginning and the sounds were something unheard of. It still has that sense of utopistic awe.
